This year, the Swiss watch brand OMEGA is celebrating its 125th spring. On this occasion, full of surprises, namely a preview of their new De Ville Treasury Edition 125 th anniversary , but above all a new edition of their caliber 19 lines, iron launching the iconic name of this great House .
For the little story
In 1848, Louis Brandt opened the first watchmaking workshop of what would later become a famous and respected name in the world of watches.
In 1894, his two sons, Louis-Paul and César, imagined a new movement that would change the watchmaking industry forever. The revolutionary 19-line caliber is indeed equipped with avant-garde mechanisms manufactured on industrial production lines. The two brothers decide to baptize it OMEGA in reference to the last letter of the Greek alphabet, thus underlining the ultimate accomplishment, the “end point” of watchmaking success.
It was following this success that the company renamed itself ” OMEGA ” in 1903, becoming at the same time the largest Swiss manufacturer of finished watches.
Celebrating a birthday and a name
125 years later, the watchmaking House celebrates its anniversary in Biel, within the OMEGA Museum, housing the most emblematic pieces of the brand’s heritage. Welcomed by Raynald Aeschlimann in person, President and CEO of OMEGA, the guests had the opportunity to follow the history of the House in 125 years of key moments.
“Today, we are very proud to represent this symbolic name. OMEGA is the only watchmaker to bear the name of one of its movements, proof of its unwavering commitment to the art of precision. This name has also become famous in many other fields, from space exploration to that of the oceans, through the Olympics and cinema, with the James Bond saga. We could not miss this anniversary. “
The great return of caliber 19
OMEGA offers a modernized version of its 19-line caliber. Indeed, after finding several components of the original movement in its archives, the brand decided to reuse them to recreate 19 movements. This caliber will also benefit from an upgrade and modern innovations in order to better anchor itself in the 21 st century. The chatons and rubies will be remanufactured identically and all the gears will be recalculated to meet contemporary standards. In addition, the movement will be equipped with an innovative Swiss manual adjustment system, the first of its kind on the 19-line caliber. All of this is complemented by a “damascening” decoration (inlay style).
Finally, the caliber will be assembled and fitted with a crown at 3 o’clock before being placed inside a new half-soap pocket timepiece.
