Brazilian tennis player Thiago Monteiro (89th in the ATP ranking) was eliminated in the third round of Roland Garros, this Saturday, by the Hungarian Marton Fucsovics (61st), who won 7-5, 6-1 and 6-3, in two hours and 21 minutes of play. Monteiro, 26, leaves Paris surpassing his best performance, the second round he reached in 2017.
On his debut in this edition of the tournament, Monteiro surprised Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili (33rd) , winning in three sets (7-5, 6-4 and 6-2). He had also overcome the second phase by defeating the American Marcos Girón (95º) with partials of 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 and 6-1. But on the third he ran into a superior opponent, who hit 7 of his 12 break points.
“It was a difficult game, he is a very solid competitor and I made some mistakes. I started very well in the first set, but I didn’t take advantage. Then it was difficult to find loopholes in his game. I had to push harder and made more mistakes. In the second and in the third he was superior “, analyzed Monteiro.
Fucsovics will compete for a place in the quarterfinals with Russian Andrey Rublev (12th), who beat South African Kevin Anderson (number 118) with 6-3, 6-2 and 6-3 ends. “I’m leaving the tournament with a good feeling, two victories and confidence, it was a beautiful week. You always want more, I wish I could have stayed, but I hope to enjoy what I did here for the end of the season,” he added.
The main Brazilian tennis player acknowledged that it was a “different” tournament in the midst of “the sanitary situation and the cold”, but thanked the French Federation for daring to organize it “at such a difficult time”.
